The Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana, UTEM, was created in 1993 by means of Bill Nº 19,239 published in the Legal Newspaper (Diario Oficial) on August 30th, of that year, with the standing of an autonomous State Higher Education Institution, having legal capacity and properties of its own.
The above-mentioned Bill defines our university as a higher education institution devoted, at an advanced level, to the creation, development and transmission of knowledge through basic and applied research; the teaching and spread of technology as well as the scientific, technical and professional formation, mainly focused on technological work.
UTEM was born from the Instituto Profesional de Santiago (Professional Institute of Santiago) (IPS) and the promulgation of the law was carried out in an emotive ceremony led by the, at that time incumbent President of the Republic, Patricio Aylwin Azócar, and the Minister of Education, Jorge Arrate, in La Moneda, the Government Palace.
From 1993 to date, UTEM has achieved a continuous development of its academic activities which includes training, technical, professional, graduate and post-degree formation. Added to the former is the implementation of the technological platform called Utemvirtual, which allows Teaching At a Distance based on digital Technologies, which has achieved the internationalization of its programs reaching countries such as Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Mexico.
UTEM has reached a level of excellence in its infrastructure, teaching quality and technological development, among many other aspects.
